Amazon Web Services sees huge potential in the Middle East cloud business

The cloud services market is set to double in size next year compared to 2016

The biggest cloud services provider in the world is Amazon Web Services (AWS). Due to an increasing amount of its global partners expressing interest for the region, it projects huge business potential in the Middle East.

In July, AWS opened three data centres in Bahrain, its first in the region. According to Teresa Carlson, vice president for worldwide public sector business at AWS,  “Our intent is not to be small, but to grow and scale fast. The Middle East region is already doing very well and we have every indication that this will be very successful for us … [It will be] one of our top-performing regions.”

While AWS has invested a huge amount into its facilities in Bahrain, it declined to disclose the exact amount. But it did say that it will hire nearly 30,000 people from across different verticals globally, and many will be from the Middle East. In fact, to train local talent especially in Bahrain, AWS announced a cloud computing degree programme with the University of Bahrain on Sunday.

Nearly 36 AWS global partners have launched operations in the Middle East when the company's data centres went live. Currently, the AWS has offices in Bahrain, UAE and Saudi Arabia. Some of its regional customers include flydubai, Careem, Al Tayyar Travel, Anghami and Union Insurance.

Once perceived to have security concerns, today, customers are moving to cloud because of security according to Ms. Carlson. A growing number of enterprises are embracing cloud services with the public cloud services market in the region expected to grow to USD1.9 billion (Dh7.97 billion) by 2020. This would be double its size from 2016 according to data from researcher Statista.
